How to Profit With the Google Affiliate Network

The Google Affiliate Network is similar to other affiliate networks in that it puts advertisers and publishers together and as a publisher you can make a profit from showing adverts on your website. However, the advertisers on the Google Affiliate Network are pretty choosy about where they advertise so you'd better have a relevant website which isn't already too cluttered with other advertisements. Here are the steps you need to take to join:

Step 1 - First you need an account for the Google Affiliate Network so visit this site and click on the Sign up as a publisher button.

Step 2 - If you already have an AdSense account select that radio button and sign in with your AdSense login details. If you don't have an AdSense account you will need to follow the online procedure to apply for one. The reason for this is that the affiliate payments all go through AdSense.

Step 3 (once you have an AdSense account) - You will need to complete the details of your primary website and the methods you use for promoting your site such as email marketing or search engine marketing. After all, if you don't promote your site, there's no point in advertisers placing their ads there. You can also list any additional websites you may want to publish adverts on. You will also need to agree to the program policies and terms and conditions.

Step 4 - You'll receive an initial email confirming receipt of your application and within a day or so you should receive a second email telling you whether your application has been approved. If it hasn't you can try to find out why but you could run into difficulties. If you are approved, proceed to Step 5.

Step 5 - Log on to the Google Affiliate Network and search for advertisers who are a match to your website. You can use the Payout Rank filter to find the best paying programs if you want to. When you have applied to the programs that interest you, you will have to wait for approval from most of them (some grant immediate approval). This can be a very slow process - as I write I have been waiting for three weeks for a response from two advertisers while two others to which I applied on the same day responded within 48 hours.

Step 6 - Check out the available links from your approved advertiser programs. Some advertisers allow you to link to specific pages or products but the method is quite well hidden - see Step 7.

Step 7 - Linking to specific pages or products. Click the Advertisers tab and choose browse existing. Click on the advertiser name to reach their profile page. If they allow you to create your own links there will be a Create Links button next to the View All Links button at the top of the page. From there it's quite simple to use; just enter the page you want to link to and a few other details and click Save.

Step 8 - Insert the code for your chosen links on your website and promote it any way you know how. A good, free way is to review the product you've chosen in an article directory and link it to a page on your site with a further article about the product which contains your affiliate link.

When AdSense Goes AWOL

When AdSense Goes AWOL. No matter how hard you work to optimize your page, there are going to be times when Google just can’t figure out which AdSense ad to deliver, so it defaults to delivering a PSA (Public Service Ad) instead.

Now I don’t have any problem with charities, but I give to the ones that I choose to give to. Since I don’t have a non-profit license of my own, the goal of my web site is to make money online and I depend on Google AdSense revenues to help pay my bills. Someday I want it to fund my retirement as well, so I can’t afford to have non-revenue PSAs showing up on my site.

The good news is the Google understands the human’s basic greedy nature, so it provides us with an alternative to donating our precious web real estate to charitable organizations. That alternative is known as AdSense Alternate Ads.

As strange as it seems, this feature allows you to let Google competitors into your site. Don’t worry, Google is allowing it with their eyes wide open. They even tell you how to set up the alternate ad code to work on your site and they let you do it right in your AdSense control panel.
Once you add the code to your site, Google will pull ads from whatever service you defined rather than serve a PSA. Google will do that even if those ads are coming from Yahoo, or Overture, or your grandmother’s attic.

This goes a long way towards ensuring that you never lose an opportunity to monetize a visitor’s time spent on your site. How nice it is of Google to gives us that opportunity.

Who do you choose?

Ah, now that’s the big question. Most people head straight for Overture or Yahoo, but there are other fish in the sea worth considering. In fact, some of these fish make their living almost solely by serving replacement ads for PSAs. Run this search(http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official_s&hl=en&q=google+psa+alternatives&btnG=Google+Search)on Google and you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

Why bother?

Sometimes Google doesn’t have any ads in its inventory to match your site’s keywords. Sometimes Google gets confused and can’t figure out which ads to deliver, so it grabs a PSA ad.

Google also has a not-so-readily-available list of what it calls “stop words”. When the Google AdSense spiders detect these words on your page they automatically trigger PSAs. Some of the more commonly known words include severe profanity (think: George Carlin’s 7 Words You Can’t Say on T.V), as well as other words which may very be quite legitimate for your site such as pharmaceutical, drugs, death, dying, abortion, and the list goes on and on. At least we THINK that it goes on and on but no one really knows for sure outside of a trusted few Google staffers.

But no matter what the reason, you don’t want non-revenue ads running on your site. There’s no excuse when Google makes it so easy to keep the revenue flowing.

Chitika, by default, uses manual targeting of products to your pages. For each page, you can enter a keyword, or series of keywords, that match the products you would like to promote, and Chitika will show the best matches. Since the ads are manually targeted by default, the program is in compliance with Google's Terms & Conditions for AdSense, and makes an excellent compliment to that program. Chitika does offer an contextual matching option if you are not running AdSense and prefer it. You will need to contact them after joining the program to enable this however.

This ones not really an alternative to Google AdSense but one that will compliment it or any of the rest. Basically Kontera monetizes your content by placing expanding, contextual ad links within your posts or pages. If you have a lot of text within your pages, Kontera can help ad a little extra to your income.

Improve Your Google AdSense Ad Relevancy with Section Targeting

There is a little known method to increase the relevancy of AdSense's ads on your pages without actually modifying your content visually. It forces AdSense to focus on or ignore certain sections of content. This is referred to as "section targeting".

What is Section Targeting?

Section targeting lets you highlight parts of your page or content that you want Adsense to emphasise or down play. Through handing Google AdSense your suggestions using targeting, you are assisting Google AdSense to improving the relevancy of your ads and as a result boost your ads CTR . Although it is quite easy to setup, I suggest that only people with at least some basic HTML knowledge should try to implement section targeting.

How do I use Section Targeting

To start using section targeting, you will need to add some HTML comment tags to your code. With these tags you can state the beginning and end of the sections you want to emphasise or de-emphasise.

The HTML you need to emphasise a section look like this:

You can also designate sections you'd like to have ignored by adding a (weight=ignore) to the starting tag like this:

<!– google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) –>

With the tags added, your final HTML code should look something like:

      Irrelevant text here

<!– google_ad_section_start –>

   This is the most important content of your webpage. You prefer Ads being shown related to this content.

This is not a Quick Fix

You can use section targeting to make suggestions about as many sections of a page as you like. However, please be aware that Google AdSense can't guarantee results, and that it may take up to 2 weeks before Google's crawlers take any changes you've made to your site into account.

To use this feature properly, you need to include a lot  of content in the section targeting tags. Using insufficient content can result in less relevant ads or Public Service Ads. Also, keep in mind that this feature should only be used to highlight significant sections of your site's relevant content.

It's against Google AdSense's policies to manipulate the ad targeting to result in ads that are not relevant to the content of your pages.

Conclusion

Use section targeting wisely. Do not wrap a single sentence or even a medium-sized paragraph in section targeting tags.

One example that I've tested is ignoring menus. NOTE that Google AdSense ignoring your menus does NOT mean Google's Crawler will so no worries there. I had a menu section with links to articles on a huge variety of topics. The topics were totally unrelated to the page / article. I wanted ads to be relevant to the article, so wrapped my menu in ignore tags and wrapped my article in ad_section targeting tags. After a few weeks, my Google AdSense ads did become much more relevant and I didn't see the same level of unrelated ads that where being shown because of the unrelated topics in the menu.

Adding Adsense ads below post title or above content area is definately a good way to increase your CTR ( click through rate ) in Blogger. Also, if you've placed it in your blogger post above the fold, you will receive higher CPM rates than at the bottom of your page below the fold area of your blogger blog. This technique of placing Adsense within a post is a great way of getting more targeted ads to your site, thus, more clicks on ads.

Every single website and its owner have the opportunity to make some great money by displaying Google Adsense ads on it. Although many webmasters are making a nice income with these ads, many aren't.

People who visit your website usually try to avoid any banner and picture ads that they see. If you want to increase your click through rate, you will want to add text ads. Google gives you that option so use it.

1. Google has confirmed that using the 336x280 rectangle ad block size does have the highest click through rate. Using this ad size will increase your click through rate and the income that you generate.
