10 Useful Tips for new Domain Name Sellers

Selling domains can be a tricky business when first starting out although if you get it right, the work involved becomes less and the profits get bigger. Domain names are relatively cheap, so domain selling is accessible to a wide range of people with varying budgets.

Generally, .com's and highly creative domains with common keywords fetch the higher prices, although good .co.uk, .org, .net domains can sell well too.

If you are a new domain seller, then these 10 tips for new domain sellers should help you on your way.

Try to get a dot com

If you purchase less popular extension (.net, .org, .biz, .info) your visitors may inadvertently type in the .com version and potentially end up going to a competitor’s site. You don’t want to go for a .net, .org, .biz, .info or other extension unless you can get the .com. Someone else got the .com? Then get creative and find a .com that will work for your project , then buy up the .net, .org, .biz, .info. This can prevent others from picking up your traffic.

Own as many versions as possible

Be open to owning as many versions of your main domain as possible. In the future you can then use various domains for special promotions or for tracking purposes. Plus you then keep these domains out of the hands of your competitors.
Try to own the .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info of your desired domain.

Don't use registered or trademarked words

Be sure you don't use registered or trademarked words and phrases that you don't own. Even misspelled versions, you don't want to be hearing from the trademark holder’s legal department. Its not worth the time and trouble.

Try to make your Domains as short as possible

The longer the domain name, the more room for typos. Also, the longer your e-mail address. But don't make domains that are 3 letters long, it has to be at least a little bit descriptive or creative.

Register your domain for as long as possible

Register your domain for at least 2 yrs. Search Engines are now looking at domain registration length as part of the criteria in ranking sites. Aged domains can be much more valuable.

Stay away from easily misspelled words

If you have to use a word that is misspelled all the time, register the misspelled version as well and point it to your site. Try not to invent words that do not have mass appeal unless they are memorable, creative and easy to spell. You don't want to have your visitors guessing what your domain means.

Set domains to Auto Renew

When you register your domain names, set them to “auto-renew” so you don’t have to worry about losing your domains down the road if you miss the reminder e-mails.

Branding

At times your company name is not as catchy or as memorable as a name that can describe what you do in a unique way. If your company or name does not carry any branding weight, look for something more creative.

Try not to use hyphenated domain names

If the .com version of your desired name is not available without hyphens, try to find another domain name. There is no point owning the dashed version if you can't own the non-dashed version. People usually type the entire .com  address without the dash  and will potentially land on a competitors site. But, there are hyphenated domains out there that do just as well as non-hyphenated.

Don't buy every domain that pops into your head

Its true, the more domains you have the better chance of selling one you have. But, at least research your choice a little bit. Have valid reasons for purchasing your domains or you could end up with a load of domains you cant shift. Its a good idea to visualise what your domain would be used for and maybe put together a mock site.
